Habesha Bride – National Capital Area Cake Show!
While perusing thru Instagram a year ago, we came across the awesome work of Sara K. Golish from Ontario, Canada. Her work completely BLEW us away and we knew we HAD to recreate one of her pieces in cake!
One piece in particular caught our eye as it was inspired by our home, Ethiopia! It was an image of an Habesha bride (Ethiopian bride) with her hair in our native braids wearing our traditional jewelry called werki. We INSTANTLY feel in love with this piece and immediately reached out to Ms. Golish to ask for permission to recreate it in cake.
She pleasantly granted us permission and just asked that we forward her photos once complete. YEAH!!!
When we presented our sculpt at the National Capital Area Cake Show in Fairfax, VA we were asked over & over again “Is that REALLY all cake?”, at which we replied “Of Course!!!!” (smile). We were even approached by a young man who asked if he could buy the piece and take home once the show was over. We were shocked by that request, and pleasantly declined. The piece took 1st place in the Semi-Professional Novelty Category and until this day, people still comment on how much they liked the piece.
Here are the steps we took to create it….. using cake, rice crispy treats and modeling chocolate:
We kept her in our shop for three months before having to tear her apart. And trust us, that literally broke our hearts!
