This past weekend, we participated in the 3rd Annual Garden State Cake Show in Burlington, NJ. This year’s theme was “Fashion Through Time” and let us tell you….fashion was well represented at the show! The awesome committee (Robin, Vanessa, Silvina, Anne & Barbara Jean) hosted a fabulous event full of great vendors, classes and fun times for all.  Along with the cake competition, there was a spectacular gumpaste designer shoe competition sponsored by one of our favorite cake designers, Swank Cake Design, out of Raleigh-Durham, NC (please check out their fabulous work if you haven’t already)!

As soon as we heard the theme, we knew EXACTLY what we wanted to do. As huge fans of Cab Calloway, Lena Horne and The Cotton Club, we wanted to pay homage to these greats by incorporating the styles of that era into our cake design. We Googled images of these greats and decided on a few “styles” to use for our inspiration. We also wanted to incorporate one of our favorite styles, the fringe/flapper dress, into our design as well.

For most cake entries, cake dummies are used as the base for tiered cakes, instead of real cake.  All decorations, though, must be made of edible material.  There is a list of rules and requirements that all entries must meet, but we won’t bore you with all that info (smile).  Judging was based on workmanship, originality, color coordination and general appearance.

It took us approximately 28 hours to complete this cake, over 5 pounds of fondant and around a pound of gumpaste.  The fringe/flapper tier ALONE took us nearly 2 1/2 hours to finish from beginning to end! But, it was all worth it as we won first place in our category as well as over all for our division!

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!!!
